Urgent Update: 81 Days in Detention for Female Climate Defenders

Three young female climate defenders—Asio Dorothy (20), Nakyambadde Teopista (25), and Nalwadda Shammy (24)—mark 81 days in detention today. Their crime? Peacefully protesting the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) on August 1, 2025.

Despite being charged with a minor offense (“Nuisance on Roads”), their basic legal rights are being denied. The court has repeatedly refused to hear their bail application, a clear violation of Ugandan law which mandates bail after 60 days for such charges.

The Human Impact:

· Asio Dorothy lost her mother while in detention and was denied the chance to bury her.

· The group includes students and single mothers, whose families and educations are suffering.

This case reflects a dangerous pattern of suppressing environmental activism and disproportionately targeting women. Liberty Pro Bono Initiative (LPI) continues to advocate for their constitutional right to liberty and a fair legal process.
