FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kampala, [3rd November 2025]
The Liberty Pro Bono Initiative is pleased to report a significant step forward in our advocacy for the 12 environmental defenders, including three female activists, who were arrested on 1st August 2025.
On 30th October 2025, our legal team held a productive meeting with officials from the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) to formally follow up on the petition we submitted regarding the ongoing violation of the defenders’ constitutional rights.
During the meeting, we presented the UHRC with a detailed account of the key concerns outlined in our petition. Our presentation highlighted:
· The Unjust Denial of Bail: We emphasized the concerning denial of the bail application by Magistrate Winnie at the Buganda Road Court, a decision that continues to keep the defenders in detention.
· Ongoing Human Rights Violations: We detailed the various human rights abuses the activists are facing while in prison, which undermine their dignity and right to a fair trial.
· Specific Vulnerabilities of Female Activists: A primary and urgent focus of our discussion was the heightened risk and specific violations being faced by the three female environmental defenders. We stressed the need for immediate attention to their safety and well-being.
In a positive and responsive engagement, the Uganda Human Rights Commission officially recorded a statement from our Liberty Pro Bono team. Crucially, the Commission has promised to commence a formal investigation into this matter.
This commitment from the UHRC is a vital development in our campaign for justice. It represents a crucial accountability mechanism and a beacon of hope for the defenders and their families. The Liberty Pro Bono Initiative will monitor the progress of this investigation closely and continue to provide all necessary support to ensure the rights and freedom of these brave individuals are restored.
We thank our partners, supporters, and the public for their unwavering solidarity. We will provide further updates as the situation develops
