Petition: Call for UHRC Intervention on the Arrest of Five Female Environmental Activists
15 September 2026.
Letter to the Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Ms. Mariam Fauzat Wangadya, from Green Guardians Women & Youth Climate Defenders Association (GGWYCDA).
The letter asks UHRC to intervene after five female environmental activists — Dorothy Asio, Sharitah Nantongo, Sharon Tino, Shakirah Kasonga and Rahuma Namuddo — were arrested on 31 August 2026 while peacefully delivering a petition to Parliament against EACOP. It cites alleged excessive force, violations of Articles 23, 24 and 29, and asks the Commission to condemn the treatment, engage security agencies on lawful arrests, and protect the activists’ dignity. Copies were received by Parliament, the Ministry of Justice, Uganda Law Society, ODPP and UHRC on 15 September 2026.
