Communiqué: East African CSOs on Uganda’s Crude Oil Naming Ceremony

8 September 2026.

East African host communities and CSOs from Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and the DRC respond to the 2 September ceremony at the Kingfisher Development Area, where government unveiled “Pearl Sweet” as the commercial name of Uganda’s crude oil.

The communiqué argues that the name is a misnomer for communities facing displacement, delayed and inadequate compensation, restricted access to land on the Buhuka flats, and wider social and environmental harm linked to Tilenga, Kingfisher and EACOP.
