Delayed by Absence: Environmental Defenders Continue to Suffer Legal Uncertainty

On 10 February 2026, the case against female environmental activists and others was adjourned to 24 March 2026 after the State Prosecutor failed to appear in court.
This latest adjournment comes after these environmental defenders had already spent over 90 days in prison following their arrest on 23 April while peacefully delivering a petition to opposing its support for the EACOP project due to environmental and human rights concerns.
These repeated and unnecessary adjournments are causing serious financial hardship to the activists, many of whom lost their jobs and sources of income during their prolonged detention. Continued delays only deepen their suffering and undermine their right to timely justice.
We call upon the judiciary to ensure a fair, speedy, and impartial hearing, and to protect environmental defenders from prolonged legal processes that amount to punishment before judgment.
Justice delayed is justice denied.
