Press release: Six Anti-EACOP Youth Activists Released on Bail as Ten Remain Jailed

23 September 2026. Kampala.

LPI welcomes the 21 September cash bail of six youth activists charged with unlawful assembly after their 31 August 2026 arrest. Ten others arrested the same day were denied bail at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court on 18 September and remanded until 12 October, charged with nuisance on a road.

Sixteen anti-EACOP activists, including five young women, were arrested while marching towards TotalEnergies and Parliament. LPI says bail must not legitimise arbitrary arrests or the criminalisation of peaceful environmental advocacy, and remains concerned about alleged mistreatment and the continued detention of the ten.
